Chapter 6 Thomas, Polly Ann, and Nancy of Virginia and Tennessee

Thomas Bandy is the son of Richard Bandy (71, 14-1) (July 8, 1722 to July 21, 1795) and Elizabeth Cardwell Bandy (71, 14-37) ( ? - 1794) who are discussed in Chapter 2. Thomas (∑) and his wives Mary Polly Christian and Nancy Burns are discussed here along with their children (∑∑).

Thomas Bandy (110, 15-1) (June 22, 1748 - October 18, 1835) was born in Cumberland County, Virginia. He enlisted as a private from Bedford County, Virginia on August 1, 1781, He was in the Battle of Guilford Court House and the siege of Yorktown. He was executor of his fatherís will. He lived in Botetourt County, Virginia before he moved to Tennessee where he died. Thomas married twice, first to Mary Polly Christian (110, 15-2) ( ? - about 1776) on November 22, 1768 and then to Nancy Burns (111, 15-0) (March 1757 - August 12, 1852) on October 12, 1777 in Bedford County, Virginia. Thomas was listed in the Virginia census for 1810 and the Tennessee censuses for 1820 and 1830. Nancy is listed in the Tennessee census for 1850 as age 95. Son Richard from Thomasí first marriage died before Thomas moved to Tennessee. Sons Cary and Thomas from the first marriage moved to Tennessee where they remained. A Thomas, probably the son, is found in Kentucky in 1800 indicating that part of the family at least was in Kentucky before moving on to Tennessee. See Chapter 10. Four sons from Thomasí second marriage moved to Illinois: Elisa by 1820, Horatio by 1830, and James and Robert Dobson by 1840.

∑∑ Cary (Carey) Bandy (157,16-2) (October 30, 1769 - 1849) married Frances Elizabeth Woods (157, 16-70) on November 14, 1791 in Franklin County, Virginia, and they had 11 children. Listed in the 1820 and 1840 Tennessee censuses.

∑∑ RichardBandy (190, 16-369) (July 10, 1771 - 1816) married Nancy Lewellen(190, 16-0) (1775 - 1815) on September 3, 1791 in Botetourt County, Virginia, and they had eight children.

∑∑ ElizabethBandy (206, 16-3) (February 7, 1773 - about 1790) married Major Maston (206, 16-402).

∑∑ Martha Bandy (207, 16-4) (August 8, 1775 - ?) married Richard Henry Vanover (207, 16-403)(1774 - ? ) on May 8, 1794 or perhaps June 7, 1794 in Botetourt County, Virginia.

∑∑ Thomas Bandy (158, 16-5) (August 8, 1775 - ?) married Nellie Akers (158, 16-168) in 1794 in Botetourt County, Virginia, and they lived in Smith County, Tennessee. Perhaps was in Kentucky for a while. See Chapter 10. Listed in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 Tennessee censuses. They had 11 children.

Thomas and Nancy had five reported children:

∑∑ JamesBandy (159, 16-6) (December 27, 1786 - ?) married Nancy Brown (159, 16-317) (1782- ? ) on April 12, 1808, and they had two children. James married Susanna (160, 16-405), and they had nine children. Apparently listed in the 1810 and 1820 Virginia censuses, the 1820 and 1830 Tennessee censuses, the 1840 Illinois census, the 1850 Tennessee census, and the 1860 Illinois census.

∑∑ Elisa (Elihu) Bandy (161, 16-7) (June 9, 1788 - January 13, 1881) married ElizabethThompson (161, 16-367) (May 17, 1791 - August 11, 1861) in Greene County, Kentucky. They lived in Illinois, and they had at least 11 children. Probably listed in the 1810 Kentucky census as Hugh Bandy. Listed in the 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860 Illinois censuses.

∑∑ Elizabeth (Betsy) Bandy (252, 16-8) (April 4, 1790 - 1852) married Bartholomew Osborn (March 15, 1775 - ? ) (252, 16-491) on October 8, 1818 in Sumner County, Tennessee, and they had six children. Bartholomew was previously married to Elizabeth Abbott and they had seven children.

∑∑ Robert Dobson Bandy (111,16-9) (February 15, 1792 - ?) is listed in the 1820 Tennessee census and possibly also listed in the 1820 Louisiana census. Listed in the 1830 Tennessee and 1840 Illinois censuses. Households prior to 1840 included about four children and a woman Robertís age, names unknown.

∑∑ Horatio (Horacha) Bandy (162, 16-10) (August 13, 1794 - December 29, 1851) married Johanna Thompson (162, 16-333) (1798 - ? ) in Logan County, Kentucky on December 12, 1818, and they had 12 children. Listed in the 1820 Tennessee census and the 1830, 1840, and 1850 Illinois censuses.
