Note   John was an ambitious man and determined to set himself up as a man of substance in the County of Buckinghamshire. Horses were in great demand for the cavalry during Britain's war against Napoleon (1805-1814) so he concentrated on selective breeding to accomplish his goal. He had great success in his venture and when hostilities ceased he turned his attention to sheep breeding because of the increased demand for woollen goods. By this time his sons had reached manhood, so John, who was not enjoying the best of health, entrusted the running of the farms more to them.8
