| Note | In 1861 Sarah Bandy, having received money from her brother, purchased her fare, and with her two daughters, Elizabeth and Maria, set sail for Singapore. Her brother, in the employ of the East India Company, had arrived there with his wife and young daughter, soon after the Colony was taken over by the British. He soon found it more profitable to carry on business of his own and had acquired considerable wealth. Upon hearing of his younger sister's dislike of the Swan River Colony, he offered to help. Thomas Bandy declined to go, but Sarah insisted on going, pointing out that there was no future for her daughters in Perth. So Thomas gave way, but refused to allow his boys to go. When Sarah and her daughters arrived in late 1861, they were amazed not only at the hive of activity there, but also by the cosmopolitan nature of the island's society. Although the two girls had not disliked the Swan River Colony as much as their mother, it did not take them long to become fascinated with life in Singapore. When Sarah acquire the small hospital which had been purchased by her brother, she and the girls went to work. Sarah had done nursing in England and Elizabeth had previously done some work at the Perth Hospital, so both were able to manage. A skilled matron was hired and Maria was taught the necessary work. Accidents were frequent and births were also numerous, so they were kept busy. As the population increased, larger premises were built and so Sarah was able to repay her brother the loan he had arranged for her. Elizabeth loved her work in the hospital and as she gained in experience she derived great satisfaction in the recovery of her patients. Whilst there, she met a patient who had broken his leg when some cargo fell on it during a storm on a voyage from Canton to Singapore. His name was Carl Habekost and was known to his fellow officers as Charlie. Although of German parentage, he could speak perfect English, and the two decided to be married on his next voyage from Canton. As he was the ship's captain, he was obliged to make the trip as soon as he was fit enough to travel. The couple were duly married on 31 March 1866. In all they had 8 children, 2 boys and 6 girls. The dtae of Elizabeth's death and other particulars of her life are unknown. |
